Shapes and Scotland.

This week in maths, we have been learning about 2 dimensional shapes.  The children have been learning about the names of shapes and their properties. They  made their own shapes out of string, which is harder than it sounds, and shape pictures.

During our weekly geography assemblies, we have been learning all about the United Kingdom. This week we looked at Scotland, and the children enjoyed trying some haggis, neeps and tatties!

Investigating materials.

This week, we continued our investigations into materials, by walking around Hythe.  We looked at all the different buildings and tried to work out what materials had been used to build them.

In forest schools this week, we continued learning about animal homes.  We used our knowledge of where animals live to hunt for soft toys in the woods.

In letters and sounds, we learned v, w and x.  Please support your child by reading with them each day at home.  Thank you.

A visit to the library.

In order to find out more about homes and materials, we went to Hythe library to see what information we could gather from non fiction books.  The children enjoyed their story and activity and were delighted to be shown how to use the scanner at the end of our visit.

In maths this week, we have been learning how to add 'one more' to numbers up to 20.  We pretended to get on a bus and practised parking toy cars to help us learn.  Please continue to  practise this key skill with your children at home.

In letters and sound this week, we learned the letters f, l and j.  J is for jelly!

Slips go into the book bags every Friday to let you know which new sounds the children have been learning each week.  Please help them to read these sounds in their reading books and to write them correctly by filling in their yellow phonics books each week.

Welcome to the Spring term.

It already seems a long time since Christmas..................................

But here we are in the Spring term!  We began our new topic with a mysterious sighting of a heap of straw and sticks, which was followed by a letter from the three pigs asking for our help to build a home which would keep them safe from the big, bad wolf. In order to help the pigs, we are going to spend the next few weeks finding out all about different types of shelters and homes and the materials they are made out of.

This week, we walked around the school grounds to see how many shelters we could find. Here are a few examples.

In forest schools, the children were given photographs of various animal homes and challenged to find them in the woods.

For some children, this task proved to be quite exhausting!
